Deep Creek Lake Area Rafting

Deep Creek Lake is near some of the best whitewater rafting in the United States. Rafters of all abilities will find the Deep Creek Lake Resort Area the perfect location for exploring whitewater trips from mild to wild.

Class II Rafting near Deep Creek Lake
Middle Yough River
The Middle Yough: From Confluence to Ohiopyle
The Middle Yough Starts in Confluence PA, about 50 minutes from Deep Creek Lake. Most people running this section, rent their equipment in Ohiopyle and get the company they rent from to shuttle them to the put-in so their cars are parked at the take out in Ohiopyle. The trip is 9 miles of floating with 5 easy class ll rapids tossed in for fun. Trip takes about 4-6 hours depending on river level and how much you want to paddle. Pack a lunch and make a day of it. This section is suitable for families with smaller children. You can rent rafts or one person inflatable kayaks called duckies. You can also try a pedal paddle package where you ride bikes up river from Ohiopyle (90 minutes) and trade bikes for boats for the float back to Ohiopyle (a full day of outdoor fun).

Lower Yough River Rafting
The Middle Yough: From Ohiopyle to Bruner Run
The Lower Youghiogheny is one of the most popular whitewater rivers in the United States. This section is class lll to class lV depending on water levels. It runs all summer and the base for rafting is the town of Ohiopyle PA which is scenic 50 minutes from Deep Creek Lake. Trip length is 4-5 hours and 7.5 miles long. There are numerous rapids and you can run the river in a variety of formats. You can go guide escorted and captain your own raft with guides going with you and pointing the way, you can go fully guided with a guide in your raft (minors must go guided), or experienced river runners can rent a raft and challenge the river on their own. Most trips feature a riverside lunch. A very scenic and fun section of river; perfect for families and well worth the drive from the Deep Creek Resort Area. Allow yourself plenty of time for travel to the river and to check in.

The Cheat Narrows: From Albright WV to Wind Rapid
The Cheat Narrows is 509 minutes from Deep Creek Lake. Many companies offer trips on this 4 mile section. It is the perfect river for beginners and families with children. Rapids are pretty straightforward and feature nice waves and some (usually) easy to avoid obstructions. Depending on the water level you can take a ducky or raft and sometimes you have the option of guiding your own boat with guides along to help and point the way.

Upper Yough Rafting
The Upper Yough (pronounced YOK): From Sang Run to Friendsville
The Upper Yough is world class whitewater rafting trip located in Garrett County and very near Deep Creek Lake. This experience is truly a hidden gem of our area and highly regarded as one of THE things to do at Deep Creek Lake. The river runs Mondays and Fridays and the first Saturday of the month in summer on guaranteed dam releases from the hydropower station at Deep Creek Lake. In spring or in rainy times it runs everyday. This is a great 9 mile rafting trip for those looking for some big action and fun. All trips are run in four man rafts with a guide. Most trips feature lunch and refreshments. The river drops an impressive 115' per mile and starts off with some flatwater so your guide can teach you what you need to know. Rapids with names like Chees Burger Falls, Triple Drop and Meat Cleaver are sure to get that adrenalin pumping. There are 6 class V rapids and 14 class IV rapids offering back-to-back non-stop excitement. Most trips meet and start with check-in in Friendsville around 11:00AM.

What to Bring Whitewater Rafting

What you wear and bring rafting depends a lot on the weather. Most rafting companies offer wet suit rentals for cooler days or early spring or fall rafting. Here's a basic list.

  • Nylon shorts with bathing suit underneath
  • T-shirt
  • Sneakers or well fitting water shoes or river sandles
  • Windbreaker for cool days
  • Disposable waterproof camera
  • Sunglasses with retainer straps
  • Brimmed hat (baseball cap?)
  • Sunscreen
  • Change of clothes for after
  • Water bottle

Other Considerations
Be sure to let the trip leader know if you have any pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes or allergies to bee stings. Eat a good breakfast and be ready for fun, and always wear a coast guard approved type 5 life jacket and keep it properly adjusted and ON while on the water.
